Hello, Yukimenoko AKA FroslassManiac here. Today I'll show you how to devamp. For those who don't know. Devamp is the opposite of Revamp. (Yay, logical.) These two are sometimes mixed up. For a devamp you'll take a sprite from nowadays, and you edit it into a gameboy style sprite. Which means, it has less shading because the amount of colours drops at a large rate.

Step 1.
First you must know all the rules of devamping. We work on gameboy size. Where the sprites would fit in a 56x56 pixel-space. With the entry of GBA and DS sprite became much larger. Mainly the DS pokémon sprites are quite large compared to the Gameboy size. There is a large rate that these sprites won't fit in that space. For this tutorial I will use Abagoura because this one is a pretty large Pokémon sprite.

Don't forget the most important thing about devamping. We need to redo the shading and colouring of the sprite. A resized sprite isn't a devamp. Now you can choose two themes. Red/Blue/Yellow or the Gold/Silver/Crystal style. I go for Gen II. The maximum use of colours is 4. And these contain both Black and White and two custom colours of your choise. Try to go for the most basic colours of the sprite. I chose Blue and Grey.

Step 2.
Our big sprite will never fit in that 56x56 square... The best is to start with resizing the sprite. If you devamp first, all your shading will be ruined.

Doesn't look impressive at all. The outlining is partly gone. Time to clean up the mess by reconnecting the outlines. Make sure it still looks a bit natural. And work with black. It will help you with future effort.

Step 3.
Now our sprite is at the right size we'll remove all shading on the sprite. Also colour all the outlines black. We'll remove the shading because of the lack of colours you won't find much shading.

Step 4.
You thought we were already there? Nope, not yet. It still needs to be a bit shaded. For this we use black and white. In the G/S/C generation dithering was mainly used because of the lack of colours. It supported the shading a bit. So let's get this party started.

And voila, your devamp is done :meow:

Great tutorial, but to me these doesn't look real since back in RBY/GSC the Pokémon had much weirder poses (think Exeggutor or Slowbro).
